Amanda Laird Cherry showcased the ladieswear Spring Summer 17/18 collection at The Durban Fashion Fair on Thursday 24 August at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Durban (Hall 5). The show time is 19h30.

About the Label

Amanda Laird Cherry is an established designer label born and made in Durban, South Africa, told through cloth & thread. The garments are ready-to-wear, designed and styled for a conscious individual. The label creates designer essentials with an element of eccentricity, which extend to become more refined and avant-garde pieces.

Amanda Cherry

Amanda studied Clothing Design graduating from Technikon Natal in 1983. She worked in the studios of two boutique businesses before joining Instinct, a surf and sportswear brand.

Instinct was produced in Southern Africa and sold all over the world; with the majority of sales in North America. She was appointed as Design Director and remained at Instinct for nearly 10 years.  Amanda also worked at Mr Price (MRP) for a period of two years.

The Durban Designer Collection (DDC) was the longest running fashion showcase in South Africa prior to the establishment of South African Fashion Week (SAFW). Amanda participated in the annual DDC shows on numerous occasions, now showing her seasonal ranges at Durban Fashion Fair and South African Menswear Week (SAMW).

Amanda has exhibited work at the London Fashion Week Expo and has presented on multiple occasions at the prestigious Design Indaba Conference and Expo in Cape Town.

The African Art Centre

Amanda Laird Cherry has sourced some beautiful craft work from The African Art Centre to accessorise the Spring Summer 17/18 collection.

The African Art Centre is a non-profit company, which preserves and mentors the development of arts, craft and design; showcasing local creative talent to stimulate sustainable social and economic upliftment.

During its 57 years of operation, the Centre has provided hundreds of artists and crafters with opportunities for self-employment and the realization of their talents. This resonated strongly with Amanda’s consistent intention of working with local artisans to sustain jobs within South Africa.

The African Art Centre shop and gallery is located at 94 Florida Road, Durban.

Guest Models

We collaborated with four friends of the brand who each have a unique aesthetic that we feel embodies what Amanda Laird Cherry and ALC Menswear is all about. A little background about our guest models:

Lu Dlamini - singer, performer

Lu was born into a musical family on the Kwa Zulu south coast. Recent standout performances include the launch of her recently released CD ‘Ulimilam’ at the Playhouse’s Drama Theater in Durban, the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2016 as well at the State Theater in Pretoria. Her strong sense of community has helped Lu forge “Art Knows No Boundaries”. She believes in the healing power of art. Through her AKNB schools project that takes live music to schools she also introduces children to the Umakhweyana, an African one stringed bow.

Unathi Matutu - store manager at The Space Gateway

From the friendly city of Port Elizabeth, Unathi Matutu, went from Draughtslady to seasoned Plus Size Ambassador. With her infectious personality, the “can-do” diva is a stylist and Store Manager at The Space Gateway, where she continues to develop her passion for fashion and local brands for plus size women.

Sazi Dlamini - ethno-musicologist, composer & performer

Sazi is composer and guitarist in the jazz-influenced South African township tradition. Presently he is lecturing full-time in the School of Arts, UKZN College of Humanities, where he was awarded a PhD degree in Musicology in 2010. In 2016 he received eThekwini Municipality’s 9th Living Legend Award for his contribution to the development of Arts & Culture.

Derrick is the man of the universe and consciously makes an effort to in tune with the fellow people around him and nature. He is a proud yet humble Zulu man. He attributes his success to his acknowledgement of his maker and those sent to him (by divine intervention) to guide, protect and share life with.
