BLAC Designs Announces Collaboration with Artist David Brits

This January, BLAC Designs and South African artist, David Brits will launch their latest image collaboration. This project is the first in a series of artist collaborations planned by BLAC for 2017.

The project takes inspiration from an artistsic method that Brits first explored whilst in residence at the St Moritz Art Academy, Switzerland . Here the artist was mentored by renowned contemporary artists, Danielle Buetti and Marcel van Eeden. Encouraged to engage with the impressive mountains and natural splendor of the surrounding area of St Moritz, Brits was struck by the beauty of the alpine flowers that he encountered on his daily walks.

He began a collection of mountain plants, and started to make high- resolution scans of them in his studio. A scanner, he discovered, was a marvelous tool for making pictures of three-dimensional objects. The results were both magical and surprising.

This method of working was further explored in the Slough Series (2015), ghostly images of snake skins, that were exhibited as part of Snake Man, the artists’ third solo show held at SMITH Gallery, Cape Town.

In Brits’ collaboration with BLAC each image features one of BLAC’s Edition 6 bags superimposed within scenes of mystical foliage. BLAC founder and creative director Hamzeh Al Farahneh and David wanted to combine their two disciplines in a creative and novel way. The result is a series of beautiful images showcasing the Edition 6 bags and bringing them to life with great depth and detail.

“I’ve been a fan of David’s work for a very long time and it is a great honor for me to work with him on the first installment of BLAC’s artist collaborations for 2017,” said Hamzeh Alfarahneh, Founder and Creative Director BLAC. “With these projects we aim to align BLAC with artists and expand our footprint in the arts community. I have always seen BLAC as a brand that is an outlet for artistic expression and not a typical fashion label. We only work on a project basis and don’t follow the fashion calendar.”

The images will be available from 1st January 2017 and can be viewed at and
